The Rome Community Development Organization was established in April 1996 by local citizens in the villiage of Rome, MS, and its surrounding areas. Dr. Gregory Braggs Sr. has been the president since its inception.

The mission of the Rome Community Development Organization is to improve race relations; strengthen the role of churches and civic organizations; promote community beautification; confront apathy, defeatism, and hopelessness; promote and attract jobs; create retail businesses to serve citizens; and expand and improve work force training programs.

The organization seeks funding to build housing and commercial buildings; improve the quality of education; improve the quality and accessibility of health care; to improve public safety; to improve drug prevention efforts; to provide recreational opportunities for youth development; to provide day care and Headstart opportunities; to promote leadership development; to strengthen and nurture families; to improve and expand higher education; and to improve the quality of services to the elderly.


Accomplishments

1. Worked with Silver Star Church and Sunflower County Board of Supervisors to bring waste treatment (sewer system) to the village of Rome, MS.

2. Make a Difference Day: Local community clean up.

3. Provides family enrichment services to community families.

4. Established a community center with a library, computers, and other activities for area residents.

5. Provides after-school and summer youth programs focused on math, reading, and homework assistance.

6. Partnered with University of Mississippi’s William Winters Institute for Racial Reconciliation to offer educational enrichment for area youth:

  • • Field trips to Ole Miss
  • • Field trips to Philadelphia, MS
  • 7. Participated in the Mississippi Home Corporation’s Home Ownership Certification Program:

  • • Certified Housing Counselors
  • • Sponsored and taught Money Smart Program to potential homeowners.
  • 8. Established Rome Community Development Organization as a Community Housing Development Organization(CHDO):

  • • Owns and operates Rome Apartment Homes (12 rental units for low and moderate income families) in partnership with Silver Star Church.
